Yard and Garden

Beautifying your great outdoors

Creating bountiful flowerbeds and caring for a manicured lawn is one of the easiest and most enjoyable facelifts you can give your home. Aside from giving you a beautiful outdoor living space, gardens and lawns also add to the curb appeal of your home and increase its value to potential buyers. Gardening lets you stretch your green thumb and get creative - cultivate a lawn and flowerbeds that will make the neighbors jealous!

Building Big

Adding a patio or deck to your yard gives you extra space to entertain guests, enjoy barbecued meals or relax during a quiet afternoon alone. Most patios can be constructed over a weekend and are a great starter project for the do-it-yourselfer.

Decks, however, require more planning and you’ll likely need to purchase a building permit. When choosing between a deck or patio, think accessibility. Decks are raised off the ground and might not be suitable for houses that aren’t elevated. Patios are great for those with mobility problems as there aren’t any stairs to climb.

Other yard structures like shed, gazebos and greenhouses add entertaining, storage and growing space to your yard. Most are available in easy-to-assemble kits or are pre-fabricated for those who aren’t confident in their handy skills.

Get Growing

Add some color and vitality to your yard by cultivating a garden. Part art and part science, gardens rely on proper irrigation, suitable nutrients from fertilizers like compost and must be maintained with the proper landscaping equipment.

However, you aren’t the only one who will enjoy your well-tended garden. Common garden pests take up residence in both cared-for and neglected yards, but there are ways you can fight back. Learn more about chemical and non-chemical pest solutions to keep your garden looking its best.

Splish, Splash

People are naturally attracted to water, and the addition of a swimming pool or hot tub will make your yard a place guests love to visit. Pools and spas are major investments, but they can add to the value of your home.

Garden ponds are another favorite for many homeowners who enjoy cultivating water plants. Adding a few fish to your pond will make it even more interesting for you, your family and your guests.

Caring for your garden is just like decorating your house. Play around with different colors and designs until you find a style that suits your home and your personality.

Monkey or Bermuda grass is excellent around decks. Just needs trimmed in the fall and spring with general household scissors. I even let my 5 y.o. help with his safety scissors. It is beautiful and low maintenance.
