Laundry Room

Function & style

It’s surprising how much time you’ll actually spend in the laundry room - especially if you have a large family. Why not make it as comfortable and convenient as possible?

Washing Machines

Washing machines come in two types - top-loading and front-loading units. Top-loading washers are most common in homes because they are the most affordable. Top-loaders fill the tub with water, and an agitator rotates to clean the clothes.

Front-loading washing machines are not as common because of their high price; however, front-loaders perform better and are gentler on fabrics because they use a tumbling method rather than an agitator to clean clothes.

Washing machines are sold in single units, washer / dryer combinations that wash and dry in a single drum, and stacked units that stack the washer and dryer on top of one another. Top-loading washers cost between $200 and $1,300 online, while front-loaders cost between $550 and $2000 online.

Dryers

Most folks can appreciate taking a set of warm pajamas out of the dryer and putting them on before bed on a cold winter’s night. Whether winter or summer, it’s much more convenient to put your laundry in a dryer than it is to hang clothes to dry.

Clothes dryers are available in both gas and electric models. The heat in a gas dryer comes from a gas burner, whereas heat from an electric dryer comes from electric heated coils. However, even gas dryers require electricity to power the motor which turns the drum and fan.

Electric clothes dryers cost about $300 to $1,200 to purchase, compared to $400 to $1,500 for a gas dryer. However, a gas dryer will consume approximately 50 percent less energy to run than an electric dryer.

Washer / Dryer Combinations

Washer / dryer combinations eliminate the need to transport your clothes from the washer to the dryer, as this combo does both the washing and drying in one single appliance. When the washing cycle is complete, the machine automatically starts drying your clothes.

Washer / dryer combinations are ideal for people who have little space to accommodate two large appliances, as the washer-dryer combination unit takes up half the space. Washer / dryer combinations come in various sizes, styles and colors. They range in price from about $500 to $2,000 online.

I purchased a used Maytag dryer Model # SDE4606AYW. It tested just fine, plugged it in and it ran great. When I hooked the dryer to my vent (which was cleaned prior to hook-up), the dryer came on but made a noise. I opened the door to stop the dryer. Now it will not start, just makes a humming noise. Not a clue, is there a reset button? Thank you to anyone who can help...

I have a purchased a new Kenmore washer and drier, stacking. When the washer is on the rinse cyle the entire unit is noisy and moving in the laundry room. It was levelled and installed properly along with the proper stacking kit. Everything works well until it gets to the spin cycle. I have also tried lowering the speed of the cycle to medium and low. Low is better but it should not be moving like this. What is the problem here ?
