Bathroom Remodeling

Bath design tips for professional-quality results

Bathroom remodeling on a budget is a tricky proposition for any homeowner; however, with careful planning, you'll be able to transform your bathroom into an attractive, peaceful oasis, which will in turn help to raise the overall value of your home.

Many homes feature undersized bathrooms, and small bathroom remodeling poses unique challenges for the do-it-yourselfer. Generally speaking, you should focus on adding fittings, fixtures, accessories and accentuations rather than dramatically rearranging the space. Installing new light fixtures, retiling the wall and adding a marble countertop to the sink will be easier and less expensive than an all-out remodel, with results that will rival the most ambitious projects.

Bathroom Renovations for Budget-Conscious Homeowners

The best way to save money on your bathroom remodeling project is to identify structures, appliances and accessories that can be salvaged, repaired or refinished rather than outright replaced. Bathtubs, for example, often accumulate thick, scummy residue over the years; while this looks unseemly, you can solve the problem by refinishing the tub's interior and adding new faucets and drains. Bathtub refinishing can save you hundreds of dollars compared to the cost of buying and installing a brand-new tub.

Sometimes, remodeling a bathroom is as easy as adding a new coat of paint and replacing the wallpaper. You'd be surprised how effective a little change can be, so if the problem is just that you're sick of the sight of your old bathroom, start here and see if it makes a difference.

Bathroom Remodeling Tips for Beginners

Before you even set a budget for your bathroom renovations, you should come up with a vision for the finished product. This will help you determine which jobs are necessary and what can be skipped in the interest of saving time and money.

Use these tips to help guide your thinking when you're coming up with your plan:

  • Peruse magazines and catalogues to generate bathroom remodeling ideas. These publications are very helpful, as they showcase the latest products and trends, often including pricing information so you can keep budgetary considerations in mind as you browse.

  • Keep your considerations practical. Remember that bathroom floors often get wet, so choose a flooring material accordingly. Avoid carpeting or surfaces such as hardwood, which can be damaged from exposure to high amounts of moisture.

  • Lighting is key. Many bathrooms suffer from inadequate lighting, especially in the shower area. If you want to add lights, consider which spots in the bathroom could benefit the most from the added illumination; your shower area and your mirror area should both be brightly lit.
